How great is this!
He wrote about the expansive NHGRI studies in The Language of God, “Out of this, we learned an incredible number of things that were surprises!”
Right off, I think of the exquisite image that was found when a photograph was taken “from a down the barrel view” of the human DNA double Helix. Perhaps this was one of the greatest surprises scientists encountered while completing the research of the human genome.
The picture above shows the exquisite design found within the first 13 year of the (NHGRI) research project. How amazing it is that this image mirrors the intricate, circular symmetry of the gothic rose windows used historically, worldwide. Examples include Chartres or York Minster cathedrals or those in small towns—even in Boise, Idaho at St. John’s Cathedral on North 8th Street.
The similarity of these two graphic patterns is striking. The one on the left is seen within a window in York Minster Cathedral in York, England. The picture on the right reveals the design now known to be within our DNA.
How awe-inspiring it is to see this beautiful, imposing rose pattern and to know it resembles what is imprinted within our DNA, I wondered, was this God’s playful way of lovingly planting His signature on every human who comes to live on earth? The vastness of the beauty God has created in this amazing place where we dwell as humans is beyond what anyone can describe.
God is the Creator of all earth’s beauty—and seems right-on to believe this artful, lovely geometrical design within our DNA is intended as a mark He enjoyed placing within us! To me, it is a beautiful way of knowing God is present with us here on earth. This same imagery has been painted, sown or carved on ancient mandalas used to quiet the mind and open the heart for those desiring the qualities of love, compassion, forgiveness, and peace.
As we love and serve Him, our very lives become expressions of His beauty. A Scripture in Zephaniah 3:17, tells us that God sings over us with joy. The Bible’s frequent theme is that God delights in us.
So often we see our humanness as something to be ashamed of, since we know ourselves and how prone we can be to break God’s rules. Yet, God has taken care of that. He has provided the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who chose to die on the cross where His blood could flow as covering for the sins of all who place their trust in Him.
Dr. Collins wrote years ago in an Internet article, “Science explores the natural world. Faith explores the supernatural world. If I want to study genetics, I am going to use science. If I want to understand God’s love, then that is where the faith world comes in . . . from my perspective, these two world views coexist.”
I wondered if including this “mark” on our DNA was God’s playful way of lovingly planting His signature on every human? It seems a beautiful assurance there is a living soul and that God is truly our Creator.
